In the classroom

Practical Solutions in the Classroom supports the Assess, Plan, Do, Review process of the SEND Code of Practice. The emphasis is often on promoting the child’s independence, including self-regulation and managing their own learning. Advice is provided about different types of support that can help the child access the curriculum.

I  work across different areas of need, SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), SLCN (Speech, Language and Communication Needs), ASC (Autistic Spectrum Conditions) or Complex Needs, as Children and Young People’s needs can fall into more than one category.
I work in collaboration with other professionals such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, sensory support services, etc. If required, I can also signpost to other sources of support.

A time-limited service can be designed according to the school’s and the child’s requirements:

Cycle of support

Cycle 1 Up to 3 consultations over 1 term, including school visits and/or online consultation

Cycle 2 Up to 6 visits over 2 terms, including school visits and/or online consultation

Cycle 3 Up to 9 visits over 3 terms, including school visits and/or online consultation

Support may include:

Meeting 1: Initial Visit, observe pupil, talk to key people, look at workbooks, logs and records.
Report 1: Record of Initial Consultation received in school within  7 working days of the visit

Meeting 2: Second visit/online consultation, target-setting to include meeting with school staff. This meeting may sometimes include other professionals, sometimes the child or young person, sometimes parents. Discussion is around the difficulties the child or young person is experiencing and how they can be helped to succeed. Up to but no more than 3 child centred objectives, with practical strategies and resources, are agreed.
Report 2: Joint Action Planning Report  received in school within 7 working days of the visit/consultation

Meeting 3: The Review Meeting with the same core group, monitors and evaluates the impact of the agreed objectives and associated strategies through further observations and/or in school/online consultation.
Report 3: Joint Impact report received in school within 7 working days of the visit

Where cycle 2 or 3 has been decided, the process will begin again with either the next set of objectives and strategies, or relevant adaptions or revisions  to the original strategies.
